Kelso and the Surrounding Area
Kelso
Kelso Square offers good shopping. Its architecture is French, as some of it was built by French Prisoners of war in the early 19th century. The central area of Kelso is cobbled and leads along Bridge Street to Kelso Abbey and the Rennie Bridge.
The remains of Kelso Abbey stand as a monument to Kelso's past. Built in the 12th century, it was once the biggest abbey in The Scottish Borders. The Abbey was largely destroyed in the 16th Century. The locals found it a useful source of stone and only a small part remains.
